What is Khatme Nubuwwat?
Allah says in Quran,
“”Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but the Messenger of Allah and the Last of Prophets. And Allah has knowledge of everything”
[Qur'an 33:40]”
The simple concept of Khatame Nubuwwat has been confused by Qadiani cult, which arose in Indian Punjab in 1889 AD
The current incidents of extremism and terrorism in our country have given a justification to this small group to re-organize and preach behind the shield of public sympathy.
I have compiled some straight forward information, some clear Ahadith (Sayings of the Last Prophet Muhammad SAW) and their clear explanation.
May Allah shows us guidance and the right path, and to those who are deviated to the wrong ways!
Ibn Kathir (d. 774 AH) in Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Azim states, after translating the Quranic Verse from Surah Ahzab.
“”Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but the Messenger of Allah and the Last of Prophets. And Allah has knowledge of everything”
[Qur'an 33:40]”
This Qur’anic verse is an unequivocally decisive primary text that there will be no prophet after him. And since there will be no prophet (nabi), it follows a fortiori that there will be no prophetic messenger (rasul). The Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:
(1) “Messenger hood and prophet hood have ceased. There will be no messenger or prophet after me.” [related by Ahmad]
(2) “My likeness among the prophets is as a man who, having built a house put the finishing touches on it and made it seemly, yet left one place without a brick. When anyone entered it and saw this, he would exclaim, ‘How excellent it is, but for the place of this brick.’[1] Now, I am the place of the brick: through me the line of prophets (Allah bless him and give him peace) has been brought to completion.” [Related by al-Bukhari]
(3) “I have been favored above the prophets in six things: I have been endowed with consummate succinctness of speech, made triumphant through dread, war booty has been made lawful for me, the whole earth has been made a purified place of worship for me, I have been sent to all created beings, and the succession of prophets has been completed in me.” [related by Tirmidhi and ibn Majah]
Allah Most Blessed and Exalted has stated in His book, as has His Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) in hadiths of numerous channels of transmission (mutawatir[2]) that there will be no prophet after him, so that whoever claims this rank thereafter is a lying [kadhab] pretender [dajjal], misled and misleading, even if he should stage miracles and exhibit all kinds of magic, talismans and spells.”
Here ends the quotation from Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Azim 3.493-494 (cf. Reliance of the Traveller W4.2).
This clear Quranic verse has been distorted by Mirza and his followers, by creating a confusion in translating the word ‘Khatam’, the Arabic meaning of this word is ‘Seal’, mirza extracts a new meaning from the verse that the prophethood is not ‘ended’ and the ’seal’ is used to ‘produce’ new Prophets, he describes that if a person follows the Holey Prophet SAW he can achieve the status of a ‘Zilli’ Nabi or Prophet – (Ma’az Allah).
The above misconception created by Mirza is totally falsehood and evil, he simply denies all the great ‘Mufassir’ and grand scholars during 1300 years, including Sahaba (Companions of the Holy Prophet SAW) , Ahle-Bait (Family members of the Holy Prophet SAW) and Tabaieen ( Immediate students of Sahaba), Taba-Tabaieen (Immediate students of Tabaieen) and grand scholars including Hafiz Ibne Kathir, Imam Raazi, Imam Ghazali and Shah Wali Ullah.
No one , yes No one defines the meaning of this verse as mirza did, this verse though very clear, can be understood by various Ahadith (Sayings of Holy Prophet SAW) in agreed upon books like Bukhari and Muslim as under, in which it is clearly explained that the Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW is last of the Prophets and no prophet will come after him, it includes both Rasool & Nabi.
Further it needs to be understood that Hazrat Essa (Jesus) will come before the day of Judgment and will fight with Imam Mehdi, with the forces of evil and they’ll kill Anti-Christ (Dajjal) at a place called ‘Lud’ near Palestine (Current Israel).
Now Mirza, also claimed to be Messiah (Jesus) and initially he claimed to be Mehdi, it is clear that both Jesus & Mehdi are two different personalities and both will come one after other before the day of Judgment and will lead muslims to fight with Anti-Christ.
If we even believe in Mirza to be as Jesus or Mahdi, I don’t know when he lead a fight or participated in any ambush, and when did Anti-Christ got killed by him and still after hundred years, there is no sign of the day of Judgment or Anti-Christ.
Here are some ahadith from Sahih al-Bukhari:
1) Abu Huraira narrated: The Prophet said, “The Children of Israel used to be ruled and guided by prophets: Whenever a prophet died, another would take over his place. There will be no prophet after me, but there will be Caliphs who will increase in number.” The people asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! What do you order us (to do)?” He said, “Obey the one who will be given the pledge of allegiance first. Fulfil their (i.e. the Caliphs) rights, for Allah will ask them about (any shortcoming) in ruling those Allah has put under their guardianship.” [al-Bukhari 4.661]
2) Sa’ad narrated: Allah’s Apostle set out for Tabuk. appointing ‘Ali as his deputy (in Medina). ‘Ali said, “Do you want to leave me with the children and women?” The Prophet said, “Will you not be pleased that you will be to me like Aaron to Moses? But there will be no prophet after me.” [al-Bukhari 5.700]
3) Abu Huraira narrated: Allah’s Apostle said, “The Hour will not be established (1) till two big groups fight each other whereupon there will be a great number of casualties on both sides and they will be following one and the same religious doctrine, (2) till about thirty dajjals (liars) appear, and each one of them will claim that he is Allah’s Apostle, (3) till the religious knowledge is taken away (by the death of Religious scholars) (4) earthquakes will increase in number (5) time will pass quickly, (6) afflictions will appear, (7) Al-Harj, (i.e., killing) will increase, (8) till wealth will be in abundance . . .” [al-Bukhari 9.237]
4) Isma’il narrated: I asked Abi Aufa, “Did you see Ibrahim, the son of the Prophet?” He said, “Yes, but he died in his early childhood. Had there been a Prophet after Muhammad then his son would have lived, but there is no Prophet after him.” [3] [al-Bukhari 8.214]
5) Hazrat Ayesha (RA) narrated: “Prophethood will NOT continue after me, except the harbingers of good news”. They asked “What are the harbingers of good news, O Apostle of Allah?.” He replied: “Virtuous and pious dreams a Muslim sees or are shown to him”. [4] Musnad of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal
6) Hazrat Ans (Razi Allah-o-Anho) relates that Hazrat Muhammad SallAllah-o-Alaihi Wa Aalihi Wasallam said: ‘Risalat’ and ‘Nubuwwat’ have been terminated; so, there shall be no ‘Rasool nor a ‘Nabi’ after me.” (Tirmizi, v.2, p.51) and (Masnad, v.3, p.267)
Some Prominent Scholars of Islam :
Imam al-Tahawi (died. 321 AH - Egypt) in al-Aqidah al-Tahawiyya states
“Every claim to prophet hood after Hazrat Muhammad SAW is falsehood and deceit.”
Imam Ghazali says in “Al Iqtasad” that:
“Certainly there is consensus of Muslim opinion in the meaning of the work Khatam-un-Nabiyeen – that it means that neither there will be any Nabi (Prophet) nor any “Rasool” (Messenger) after Hazrat Muhammad SallAllah-o-Alaihi Wa Aalihi Wasallam. There is consensus that there is no need of elucidation and reinterpretation of the word and the denier of this “Ijma (consensus) is in fact denier of Ijma.”
